Table of oral medications that cannot be divided or crushed

The following table presents oral drugs that should not be divided or crushed. We tried to provide the latest and most accurate information possible. Given the huge amount of drugs on the market, it is virtually impossible to have a complete list. The medications that are not on this list are not necessarily possible to divide or crush. Due to new ongoing studies or case reports, information considerer accurate today, may be obsolete next month. When in doubt, it is suggested to check with the manufacturer, and then to judge according to the physicochemical characteristics of the drug form and the clinical situation. One must remember that there are always alternatives, in another form or in the same class products, which can be used safely and are recognized. The options in the table are only suggestions and not a substitute for clinical judgment of the pharmacist or health professional. The frequency of administration must be adjusted if the alternative is not a sustained release form.

We encourage drug manufacturers and health professionals to send us any information that would complement, improve and keep updating this list for future publications.

Please send any suggestions or comments to peter.dvorak@videotron.ca
